In the early 1800s writing poetry was a popular activity in Japan. Published poems were often accompanied by pictures drawn by artists to further enhance the mood or theme of the poems. Hokkei was one such artist. Twenty-one of his poem-pictures featuring flowers and (or) birds are included in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Hokkei was a student of the famous Japanese artist Hokusai Katsushika and adopted Hokusai’s practice of exaggerating the head size of birds.
